The Giro d'Italia stops by Hotel Marinetta
“An emotion to live together” was the slogan invented in Livorno for the arrival of the fourth round of the Giro d'Italia, the edition of the 150th anniversary of National Unity. Unfortunately the day was marked by the untimely mourning that struck the race. The tragic fall of Belgian cyclist Wouter Weylandt, 26 years old, who died in a downhill towards Rapallo, prevented the event of the pink caravan arriving in Livorno to be transformed into a celebration. In fact no one, not the athletes, nor the organisers were in the mood to celebrate. The city replied with composure and solidarity towards the fallen cyclist's family, embracing them in pain and brotherhood. The Livorno stop was the only Tuscany arrival of the 2011 Giro d'Italia; the following day, in fact, on Wednesday May 11th, the pink race started again from Piombino, another location in the province of Livorno touched by this historical Giro, to reach the arrival point in Orvieto
